Foreword of amerika, “all for the purpose of writing a realistic novel authenticated with ‘up-to-date’ american detail” (doctorow ix) kafka’s first novel, though unfinished, traces the struggles of sixteen-year-old immigrant karl rossmann as he journeys through unknown territory in order to follow his american dream.
But it wasn't until 1927, three years after his death, that max brod, kafka's friend and literary executor, edited the unfinished manuscript and published it as `amerika` kafka's first and funniest novel, `amerika `tells the story of the young karl rossmann who, after an incident involving a housemaid, is banished by his parents to america.
Klaus mann, introducing an edition of “amerika” in 1946, wrote that kafka “deeply and simply loves his innocent creature, his favorite dream, his heir,” karl rossmann.
Amerika, also known as the man who disappeared, the missing person and as lost in america (german: der verschollene), is the incomplete first novel of author franz kafka (1883–1924), written between 1911 and 1914 and published posthumously in 1927.
Of kafka's three great novels, america is the lightest and most conventional in terms of story-telling it has little of the surreal menace of the trial or the castle even so, karl rossmann, the central character in america, is often a pawn buffeted this way and that by human forces he can neither control nor avoid. Author franz kafka explored the human struggle for understanding and security in his novels such as amerika, the trial and the castle synopsis born on july 3, 1883, in prague, capital of what is now the czech republic, writer franz kafka grew up in an upper middle-class jewish family. Kafka’s first and funniest novel, amerika tells the story of the young immigrant karl rossmann who, after an embarrassing sexual misadventure, finds himself “packed off to america” by his parents. Kafka had published the first chapter separately under the title der heizer (“the stoker”) in 1913 the narrative concerns the efforts of young karl rossmann, newly arrived in america, to find his place in an enigmatic and hostile society.
Never the less some irony's comes into play through the development of amerika's characters, by finding ways to deceive the poor and innocent karl rossmann (main character) such mood tends to be the main feeling of the plot throughout the book kafka did an excellent job with his main character, by giving us (the audience) feelings of pity, for the misfortunate and misfit teenager karl rossmann, who never finds a peaceful nor happy place to be. Franz kafka was born in 1883 in prague, where he lived most of his life during his lifetime, he published only a few short stories, including “the metamorphosis,” “the judgment,” and “the stoker” he died in 1924, before completing any of his full-length novels.
